Progress 8

Progress 8 is a measure of a pupil's progress from primary to secondary school across eight key subjects.

Pupils' results are compared to the actual achievements of other pupils (with the same prior attainment) which allows for all schools to be compared in the same way.

A school's Progress 8 score is the average of all pupils' Progress 8 scores. The DfE have classified schools in the following way based on their Progress 8 score:

Description

National Position

Progress 8 Score

Well above average

About 14% of schools

+0.5 and higher

Above average

About 17% of schools

Higher than 0 but lower than +0.5

Average

About 37% of schools

Close to 0

Below average

About 19% of schools

-0.5 or higher but less than 0

Well below average

About 14% of schools

Lower than -0.5

A school with a Progress 8 score of +0.50 means that, on average, pupils achieved half a GCSE grade higher in each subject than they were expected to achieve. Conversely, a school with a Progress 8 score of -0.50 means that, on average, pupils achieved half a grade less than they were expected to achieve.

For the 2019 cohort, the Academy achieved a Progress 8 score of +0.48 - DfE Performance Tables
